A trip to the Pieniny Mountains to go rafting on the River Dunajec is an absolute must for most visitors to the Tatras and the Podhale region. Travelling on traditional rafts down the river is not only an exhilarating experience, it is also a good opportunity to see one of the most picturesque parts of Poland, including a large man-made lake.
The rafting season starts on April 1 and ends on October 31. Rafters dressed in traditional highland costumes pick up passengers at Sromowce Kąty and take them to Szczawnica (18 km) or Krościenko (23 km). Ever year over 100,000 people see from the river itself how the waters cut beautifully through the white rocks of the Pieniny. In the past rafting started upriver in Czorsztyn. The rafters had to move down the river when construction of a reservoir and dam began at what is now called Jezioro Czorsztyńskie (Lake Czorsztyn). But they still take passengers along the most impressive sections of the Dunajec Gorge.
The dam became another tourist attraction. Over 52 m high and 400 m long, it banks up the waters of the Dunajec, creating a lake of about 1,200 ha, which is dominated by two picturesque castles, Czorsztyn and Nidzica. The tourist infrastructure is developing gradually all around the reservoir, and more and more hotels, jetties etc. appear every year. There are boat and pedal boat rentals, caravan and camp sites, and restaurants with regional cuisine. (b)

Dla gości odwiedzających Tatry i Podhale wypad w sąsiednie Pieniny i uczestnictwo w spływie Dunajcem to jazda niemal obowiązkowa. Podróż tradycyjnymi flisackimi tratwami rzeką daje mnóstwo emocji, a jest też okazją do obejrzenia jednego z najpiękniejszych zakątków Polski, którego krajobraz od niedawna wzbogaca duże sztuczne jezioro.
Sezon flisacki rozpoczyna się 1 kwietnia i trwa do do 31 października. Flisacy ubrani w tradycyjne, góralskiej stroje zabierają turystów na tratwy w przystani w Sromowcach Kątach w podróż liczącą 18 km (do Szczawnicy) lub 23 km (do Krościenka). Rocznie ponad sto tysięcy osób ma okazję przekonać się z poziomu rzeki jak pięknie Dunajec przedziera się przez białe skały Pienin. Dawniej spływ rozpoczynał się wyżej, w Czorsztynie. Od kiedy jednak rozpoczęto budowę tamy w Niedzicy i sztucznego zbiornika zwanego dziś Jeziorem Czorsztyńskim flisacy musieli się przenieść w dół rzeki. Nadal jednak wożą turystów przez najciekawsze widokowo fragmenty przełomu Dunajca.
Region razem z jeziorem zyskał jednak kolejną atrakcję turystyczną. Zapora wysoka na 52 m, a długa na 400 m spiętrza wodę rzeki i tworzy zbiornik o powierzchni ok. 1200 hektarów. Nad jego taflą wznoszą się dwa piękne zamki w Czorsztynie i Niedzicy. Wokół jeziora stopniowo rośnie infrastruktura turystyczna. Pojawiają się przystanie, hotele, są wypożyczalnie żaglówek i rowerów wodnych, pola campingowe i caravaningowe, regionalne restauracje.

Für Gäste, die die Tatra und Podhale besuchen, ist der Abstecher in das benachbarte Pieniny-Gebirge und die Teilnahme an einer Floßfahrt auf dem Dunajec-Fluss fast obligatorisch. Die Fahrt auf dem Fluss in traditionellen Flößen löst Emotionen aus und bietet die Gelegenheit, eine der schönsten Ecken Polens zu besichtigen, dessen Landschaft seit einiger Zeit um einen großen Stausee bereichert wurde.
