The Benedictine Monastery, which is situated on a limestone cliff that hangs over the River Vistula in Tyniec, is associated by Cracovians with the smiling face of Father Leon Knabit. Well known from TV programmes, he has a very good sense of humour and likes laughing a lot, also at himself. He writes wise and humourous books and has become a very good trademark of his abbey, which is said to have developed dynamically in recent years, and opened up more to people.
The Benedictine Monastery is one of Cracow’s most significant buildings, as it was founded almost 1,000 years ago in 1044. The order has experienced changing fortunes over the centuries. It played an important role during the birth of Polish statehood, survived a Tartar invasion and has faced excessive state intervention in monastic life, but has also had glory days, which allowed it to reconstruct the monastery after the ravages of successive wars. The order was dissolved in 1816, the buildings fell into ruin, and the last monk died in 1844.
The Benedictines returned to Tyniec in 1939, and a thorough recon-struction, particularly intensive in recent years, of the neglected abbey started after the Second World War. The reconstruction of the south wing of the monastery is its latest effect. The building houses the Benedictine Culture Centre, which has taken the words ‘To protect the good’ as its motto. The centre organises, among other events, an Advent and a Lent retreat, during which the participants can stay in the monastery for several days and live an almost monastic life, with a wake-up call at 5.30 a.m., then matins, mass, etc. until evening vespers and lights out at 8.30 p.m.
This opportunity is becoming more and more popular with lay people who seek closer contact with God and want to get away from everyday hustle and bustle behind the monastery walls. The Benedictines also hold special retreats for politicians, journalists and people preparing for marriage.
The number of people who visit the monastery for less spiritual reasons is growing too. Such reasons are: pilgrim’s bread, meditation preserve, saffron milk caps in novice sauce, Abbot’s monastery beer or even pre-council preserve. All those Benedictine products can be bought in a small shop in the monastery or tasted in the restaurant there. And one more thing. Father Leon is always there.

Zakon benedyktynów położony na wapiennej skale nad Wisłą w Tyńcu kojarzy  się dziś mieszkańcom Krakowa z uśmiechniętą twarzą ojca Leona Knabita.  Znaną z prowadzenia programów telewizyjnych, ale przede wszystkim z bezpośrednich kontaktów. Mnich ma znakomite poczucie humoru, uwielbia się  śmiać, także z samego siebie. Pisze mądre i pełne humoru książki. Świetnie  nadaje się na znak firmowy swojego opactwa, które w ostatnich latach mocno  się rozwija i otwiera na ludzi.
Klasztor benedyktynów należy do najszacowniejszych krakowskich budowli.  Założony został niemal tysiąc lat temu, w 1044 roku. Przechodził bardzo  różne koleje losu. Odgrywał ważną rolę w czasie kształtowania się polskiej  państwowości, przeżywał najazdy m.in. Tatarów, nadmierne ingerencje władzy  świeckiej w zakonne życie i okresy świetności, które pozwalały odbudowywać  klasztor po kolejnych pożogach. W 1816 roku zakon został skasowany, budynki  popadły w ruinę, a ostatni mnich zmarł w 1844 roku.
Benedyktyni wrócili do Tyńca w 1939 roku, a po II wojnie światowej  rozpoczęła się odbudowa zniszczonego opactwa, szczególnie intensywna w ostatnich kilku latach. Jej ostatnim efektem jest odbudowa południowego  skrzydła klasztoru. W tym budynku umieszczono Benedyktyńskie Centrum  Kultury, które za dewizę przyjęło słowa “Aby chronić dobro”. Organizuje ono  m.in. rekolekcje, podczas których ich uczestnicy mogą zamieszkać na kilka  dni w klasztorze i spędzać je tak jak mnisi. A więc pobudka o 5.30, potem  jutrznia, wspólnotowa msza itd. aż do wieczornych nieszporów i ciszy nocnej  rozpoczynającej się o godz. 20.30.
Ta propozycja spotyka się z rosnącym zainteresowaniem świeckich szukających  za klasztornymi murami zbliżenia do Boga i oderwania od natłoku spraw życia  codziennego. Benedyktyni organizują też specjalne rekolekcje dla polityków,  dziennikarzy, osób przygotowujących się do małżeństwa.
Przybywa także ludzi na codzień odwiedzających opactwo z powodów lekko  tylko uduchowionych. Oto one: chleb pielgrzyma, konfitura medytacyjna,  rydze w zalewie nowicjackiej, piwo klasztorne opata, a nawet konfitura  przedsoborowa. To wszystkie benedyktyńskie produkty można kupić w klasztornym sklepiku, albo posmakować w tamtejszej restauracji. No i zawsze  można spotkać ojca Leona.

Der auf einem Kalkfelsen an der Weichsel in Tyniec gelegene Benedik-tinerorden assoziiert sich den Einwohnern Krakaus mit dem lächelnden Gesicht des Paters Leon Knabit, bekannt durch die von ihm selbst moderierten Fernsehsendungen und vor allem durch direkte Kontakte. Der Mönch hat einen ausgezeichneten Sinn für Humor. Er schreibt kluge und humorvolle Bücher. Er eignet sich hervorragend als Markenzeichen seiner Abtei, die in den letzten Jahren sehr stark expandierte und sich den Menschen öffnete. In dem bereits wieder aufgebauten Südflügel des Klosters wurde das Benediktiner Kulturzentrum untergebracht, das u.a. Exerzitien für Menschen aus verschiedenen weltlichen Milieus veranstaltet. Die Teilnehmer können für einige Tage ins Kloster einziehen und so die Zeit wie die Mönche verbringen.
