The 20th year of the Festival of Jewish Culture, one of the largest and the most important event of its kind in the world, is to be held in Cracow’s Kazimierz from 26th June to 4th July, 2010. The programme is traditionally very wide-ranging and varied, but this year it cannot be said that it in any way resembles a programme to celebrate a jubilee.
‘I do not pay any attention whatsoever to so-called jubilees. What is it supposed to mean to me? Yet another festival does not mean the end of any particular stage, nor is it a summary of the previous achievements or an occasion for a ‘veteran’s’ reflections. I have little interest in what is already behind us, so my reluctance to emphasise the jubilee character of the festival, comes from the fact that I can have no influence at all on what has already happened. Honestly, I am only interested in what is happening now and in this sense what is going to happen, the future. It is the future that is the real challenge, that is the most interesting and that fascinates me. The festival itself is for me a constant process of change. As Rabbi Nachman of Bracław says: ‘Redemption is included in change and the recurrence of things.’ Thus, any characteristics of the festival that could be linked to a jubilee are the result of the inexorable logic of time, which has found its expression in the number 20,’ says Janusz Makuch, the Director and co-founder of the Festival. Looking into the future, each year the organisers prepare a programme that includes concerts, workshops, visits to Judaic monuments in Kazimierz, literary meetings and lectures. The great concert, ‘Shalom’, remains the traditional finale of the Festival. It usually attracts many thousands of people, and those who want to enjoy themselves throughout the night make sure they are in the area right in front of the stage, which is constructed in ul. Szeroka in the heart of Kazimierz. The form of this year’s concert (3rd July) has been altered somewhat from previous years. Usually the performers are artists who could also be seen and heard on other days of the Festival. This time, beside such artists, there will be musicians who have been invited especially to perform in the final concert such as, for instance, Parno Graszt, a large Gypsy band from Hungary, Konsonas Retro, a family brass band from Ukraine, Sexteto Rodriguez and Roberto Rodriguez’s Cuban Jewish Allstars from the U.S.A., thus connecting the exuberant Jewish and Cuban traditions. It will be also possible to see an international project entitled ‘Other Europeans: the Klezmer and the Gypsy’, in which a 14-person band discover together the similarities and differences between the two musical traditions. So, regardless of the difficulties of the number 20 the Festival and its final concert promise to be at the very least as equally fascinating as in previous years. (b)

W tym roku od 26 czerwca do 4 lipca na krakowskim Kazimierzu odbędzie się dwudziesta edycja Festiwalu Kultury Żydowskiej, jednej z największych i najważniejszych tego rodzaju imprez w świecie. Jego program tradycyjnie będzie bardzo bogaty, ale w każdym razie nie jubileuszowy.
– Nie przywiązuję najmniejszej wagi do tzw. “jubileuszu”. Bo niby co miałby on dla mnie oznaczać? Kolejny festiwal nie jest ani zamknięciem jakiekolwiek etapu, ani podsumowaniem jakichkolwiek osiągnięć, nie skłania do “kombatanckich” rozważań. Moje nikłe zainteresowanie tym, co za nami, a zatem i niechęć do podkreślania jubileuszowego charakteru festiwalu wynika przede wszystkim z faktu, że nie mam żadnego, ale to kompletnie żadnego wpływu na to, co już było. Tak naprawdę interesuje mnie to, co jest teraz i w tym sensie to, co ma dopiero nastąpić, czyli przyszłość. To przyszłość jest wyzwaniem, ona jest najciekawsza, ona mnie fascynuje. Festiwal jest dla mnie nieustającym procesem przemian. A jak mówi Rabbi Nachman z Bracławia “W przemianie i nawrocie rzeczy zawiera się odkupienie”. Zatem jubileuszowy charakter festiwalu jest wynikiem nieubłaganej logiki czasu, która znalazła swą ekspresję w rachitycznej liczbie 20 – mówi Janusz Makuch dyrektor i współtwórca festiwalu. Kierując się więc ku przyszłości organizatorzy przygotowali program obejmujący koncert, warsztaty, zwiedzanie judaistycznych zabytków Kazimierza, spotkania literackie czy wykłady. Finałem Festiwalu pozostaje wielki koncert “Szalom”, który zwykle ściąga przed scenę rozstawioną na ulicy Szerokiej, a więc w sercu Kazimierza, dziesiątki tysięcy ludzi, którzy przychodzą tam by wspólnie się bawić niemal przez całą noc. Formuła tegorocznego koncertu (3 lipca) w stosunku do lat poprzednich została nieco zmieniona. Zazwyczaj wypełniali go wykonawcy, których wcześniej można było zobaczyć i usłyszeć podczas wcześniejszych dni festiwalu. Teraz obok nich wystąpią artyści, którzy zostali specjalnie zaproszeni do występu w finale. Będą to m. in.: Parno Graszt – wielka cygańska kapela z Węgier, rodzinny zespół brasowy Konsonans Retro z Ukrainy, “Sexteto Rodriguez and the Cuban Jewish Allstars” Roberto Rodrigueza z USA łączący w żywiołową mieszankę tradycję żydowską i kubańską. Zobaczyć będzie można międzynarodowy projekt “Inni Europejczycy: Klezmerzy i Cyganie”, w którym 14-osobowy zespół wspólnie odkrywa podobieństwa i różnice między tymi dwoma tradycjami muzycznymi. Tak więc, niezależnie od rachityczności liczby 20, festiwal i jego finałowy koncert zapowiadają się przynajmniej równie frapująco jak przez minione lata.

In diesem Jahr findet in der Zeit vom 26. Juni bis zum 4. Juli im Krakauer Kazimierz das zwanzigste Festival der Jüdischen Kultur, eine der größten und wichtigsten Veranstaltungen dieser Art in der Welt, statt. Sein Programm wird traditionsgemäß vielfältig sein, aber keinen speziellen Jubiläumscharakter haben. In die Zukunft blickend, bereiteten die Veranstalter Konzerte, Workshops, Besichtigungen judaistischer Sehenswürdigkeiten von Kazimierz, literarische Treffen oder Vorlesungen vor. Das Festivalfinale wird wie immer durch ein großes Konzert „Schalom“ geprägt, das in der Straße ul. Szeroka (am 3. Juli) stattfinden wird. Gewöhnlich traten bisher während dieses Konzertes Künstler auf, die man bei Konzerten an den vorhergehenden Festivaltagen sehen und hören konnte. Jetzt werden neben ihnen auch Künstler auftreten, die zur Teilnahme am Festivalfinale extra eingeladen wurden.
